I've been trying to search for a somewhat comprehensive guide on how to install #linux projects in one's $HOME directory, e.g. $HOME/usr, but all I can find is "install your stuff in /usr/local". I know about ./configure --prefix=... but I'm looking for all the things I'm missing, like ldconfig, pkgconfig and other stuff I don't know about. Is it really a #bestpractice / #goodidea to have to use #root for every random $binary you download/build from internet?
